Cost
What pet relocation really costs, with sources (and why every range you read is useless)
Updated
Pet relocation pricing has a transparency problem: most operators publish nothing, and the ranges that do exist are so wide they answer nothing. Both facts have the same cause: the price genuinely depends on corridor, pet size, travel mode and season, and the industry mostly prices by email. This page does two things: gives you the real, sourced ranges so you can sanity-check any quote, and shows you what moves the number, so a range can become your number.
The sourced ranges, corridor by corridor
- Professional international door-to-door, generally: most international dog relocations run USD 3,000 to 10,000+ depending on destination, crate size, cargo fees and vet prep; a full-service operator's door-to-door offer starts around USD 4,500 for one pet.
- UK outbound: GBP 1,400 to 8,000 for a dog depending on size and destination, plus GBP 89 to 350 for the Animal Health Certificate and vet prep (see the UK corridor guide).
- UK domestic and short-haul road: GBP 300 to 1,500 for courier-style jobs.
- EU to US air corridors: about USD 1,000 to 6,000 from Germany as a representative band, driven mostly by crate dimensions and airline cargo pricing.
- US ground marketplace floor (for scale): bid-marketplace drivers quote roughly USD 0.56 to 0.60 per mile; short-distance pet shipping USD 100 to 300, long-distance USD 350 to 600 on general freight marketplaces, plus service fees.
- Maximum-compliance corridors (Australia, New Zealand, Japan): frequently USD 10,000+ all-in. Australia's mandatory minimum 10-day quarantine at the Mickleham facility alone carries about AUD 1,768 to 1,877 in government set fees, before airline handling recovery and any extra treatments, and errors in the titre-test sequencing months earlier extend the stay.
What actually moves the number
Six drivers explain nearly all of the spread:
- Crate size. Airline cargo is priced by volumetric dimensions, so a Great Dane's crate can cost more to fly than a human seat, while a cat travels for a fraction. The crate itself runs roughly USD 100 to 600+ before custom builds.
- Travel mode. Cabin is cheap but capped at 8 kg at the big EU carriers; hold and manifest cargo carry handling and agent fees (how modes are decided).
- Corridor compliance load. A France-to-Germany road move needs a passport and a car; an Australia move needs a titre test, an import permit, quarantine booking and about 7 months of runway.
- Vet prep and documents. Vaccinations, certificates, treatments and endorsements each carry fees (the UK's AHC alone is GBP 89 to 350).
- Season. Embargo windows shrink routing options in summer and deep winter, and scarce capacity prices accordingly.
- Service level. Door-to-door with a coordinator costs more than airport-to-airport; it also fails less.
How to compare quotes fairly (and spot the rotten one)
Comparing pet transport quotes is only meaningful like-for-like: same route, same mode, same crate spec, same inclusions (documents? vet visits? customs? ground legs on both ends?). A quote thousands below the sourced ranges above is not a bargain, it is a signal: the documented scam pattern in this industry starts with an implausibly cheap offer and recovers the difference through escalating "unexpected" fees, or never delivers at all (how to avoid pet transport scams). A legitimate cheap quote exists, but it earns trust with verifiable credentials and payment protection, not urgency.
The anti-range
Every number above is honest and none of it is your price. Your price depends on your pet's weight and breed, your corridor's rules, your dates and the season. That computation is exactly what Pawport does for free: build your pet's profile and get instant, itemised quotes from vetted transporters, or run the precheck to see your route's requirements first. Each of our corridor guides also carries its route's typical range, so the reality check travels with you.
Frequently asked questions
Why did I get quotes of EUR 2,000 and EUR 6,500 for the same move?
Probably different inclusions (documents, vet visits, ground legs), different modes, or one quote assuming a smaller crate. Rebuild both quotes over the same spec before concluding anyone is gouging; if the cheap one resists itemisation, walk away.
Is it cheaper to fly my pet as excess baggage than cargo?
Often, when allowed: baggage-hold rates are typically flat fees while cargo is dimensional. But eligibility rules (weight, breed, destination, season) decide first, and for some routes, like the UAE, manifest cargo is mandatory regardless.
What does quarantine cost in Australia?
About AUD 1,768 to 1,877 in government set fees for the minimum 10-day Mickleham stay, plus airline handling recovery and any additional treatments. The bigger cost is time: preparation runs about 7 months, and sequencing errors extend the stay.
